Charleston, SC -
Competing against a strong pool of Southern Conference foes, the women tied for eighth-place at the 2004 conference tournament on the Starmount course in Greensboro, NC, as they wrapped-up the 2004 season. Sophomore Kayla Bowsher led the Bulldog effort with a 243 (82-83-78) stroke total. Bowsher led the team all season as she posted a spring season-team low-round score of 73 and a 79.92 stroke average.
"I am really proud of the ladies, especially with the tremendous progress the team showed over the course of the golf season," remarked head coach Kim Lewellen. "With the team working hard this summer I have high aspirations for the fall season and look forward to the future."
The first female golfer at The Citadel, Suzanne Campbell, completed her final season as a Bulldog. During her career she competed as an individual (2000-2001) and helped build a team for her final two years, during which Campbell compiled a 86.72 stroke average in 49 rounds of play. Campbell earned a spot on the Division I All-American Scholar Team in 2003 and recently received the 2004 College Golf Foundation Graduate Scholarship Award.
Four Citadel golfers, Bowsher, Campbell and sophomores Tracy Hancock and Kelley Thorsen found the leader board as the Bulldogs placed fifth overall at the Winthrop-Waterford Invitational. The Bulldogs also secured a fifth-place finish at the B-CC/Coca-Cola tournament as Bowsher's 156 (75-81) captured sixth. Sophomore Kayla Bowsher led the Bulldogs in six straight tournaments. The Bulldogs hosted the first annual Charleston Challenge this spring as sophomore Tracy Hancock paced The Citadel to a third-place finish as all five members earned a spot on the leader board. The team just missed the women's all-time tournament low by three shots at the Snowbird Invitational as they fired a 652 to capture ninth-place. Campbell tied for 26th as she escorted the Bulldogs with a 163 (83-80) shot total.
The Bulldogs will return five of the six golfers from this year's roster and will add on two new faces, Alexandria Lucisano and Maggie Dunning, for the 2004-2005 season.
