Charleston, SC -
Citadel Director of Athletics Les Robinson announced the 2004 Bulldog football schedule Monday afternoon that consists of 10-games and includes trips to national power and SEC member Auburn and ACC foe Duke.
"This is a very exciting schedule for our football program when you factor in the challenges of the Southern Conference schedule as well as facing I-A programs in Auburn and Duke," Robinson stated. "We feel that playing such a challenging schedule is one of the key ingredients in recruiting cadet-student-athletes that can compete day-in and day-out against I-AA powers Appalachian State, Furman, Georgia Southern and Wofford."
The 2004 schedule contains four home games that include match-ups against cross-town rival Charleston Southern, I-AA power Georgia Southern as well as Southern Conference match-ups against Chattanooga and Western Carolina. The contest against Georgia Southern on October 23rd will serve as Parents' Day, while the game against Chattanooga will serve as Homecoming on November 6th.
The Citadel's away schedule features games against I-A foes Auburn on September 25th and Duke on October 2nd. The away tilts also feature match-ups against Southern Conference foes Appalachian State, Furman, Wofford and Elon.
"The schedule for the 2004 season is exciting and challenging," Citadel head coach John Zernhelt stated. "The Southern Conference will be as tough as ever this year and when you add Auburn and Duke in the mix it makes for one of the most challenging schedules in Division I-AA football."
The schedule also includes an open-date on September 11th. That date could be used to add an additional home game between now and the start of the 2004 season.
"There is a possibility of us adding another game to the schedule in 2004," Robinson stated. "One of the major roadblocks in the 2004 schedule was VMI and ETSU dropping out of the Southern Conference. Unfortunately VMI and The Citadel were unable to work out a game in Lexington or in Charleston on their open dates due to conference and prior scheduling obligations. VMI will be on the schedule in 2005 and it is our full intention to continue 'The Military Classic of the South'."
The Citadel will open the regular season on Saturday, September 4th as they host Charleston Southern in Johnson Hagood Stadium with a game time still to be determined.
