Cross Country and Track & Field Post-Season Awards

Charleston, SC - The Citadel men's and women's cross country and track and field teams celebrated one of their more successful years Tuesday night, May 4, with profound hopes for next season.

"We will miss our seniors, but look forward to a new year and a new recruiting class," remarked head coach Jody Huddleston. "We feel that this year was very successful and as always will look to improve next year."

Awards were given for The Citadel's men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. Senior Robert Killian was named the men's cross country MVP for the second year in a row. Killian led the Bulldogs with a personal-best 5k time of 26:55.91 at the Furman Invitational. Freshman Laura Hewston, who became the Bulldog's second fastest female 5k distance runner (19.43.00) at The Citadel Invitational, received the women's MVP. Other cross country award recipients included, junior Marc Quesenberry and freshman Amanda Rawl, who received the men's and women's outstanding competitor honor.

The Citadel's men's and women's track and field teams named senior decathlete Travis Taylor and newcomer Stephanie McNeill the MVP's of the 2004 season. Taylor placed among the top-ten in various events throughout the season, including a distance of 11.10 in the shot put at Davidson. McNeill broke numerous school records various throwing events during the season, most notably, the 20-pound weight and the shot put.

Senior Hunter Reid was the first recipient of the Bill Braskey Award. New to the award ceremony this year, the Bill Braskey honor is given to one cadet who exemplifies the ideal all-round student-cadet-athlete at The Citadel; someone who "goes well beyond the call of duty."

Other track and field performers receiving honors were seniors Erick Austin and Rose Rodriguez, Keith Hamilton Most Improved Track Athlete; senior Chris Franklin and sophomore Martha Skinner, outstanding field competitor; sophomores Thomas Cummings and Miriam Crawford and freshman Thomas Pressley, outstanding track competitor; Taylor and McNeill, high point award.

The track and field team will travel to their final meet of the season, May 14-15 in Atlanta, GA. The Reebok Invitational is set to begin at 8 AM on May 14. Senior Alex Prince qualified for the NCAA Regional in the 400-meter dash and will travel to Gainesville, FL May 28-29.
