CollegeBaseballInsider.com announced early Wednesday morning its 2004 All-American team and named The Citadel's Jonathan Ellis as a member of its second-team.
Ellis, a sixth-round draft pick by the San Diego Padres, finished the year with a win-loss record of 12-3 and an earned run average of 2.12, tops in the Southern Conference. He struck out 131 batters in 136.1 innings, while only walking 39.
The junior hurler from Charleston tied The Citadel's single-season complete game mark with nine, including four in as many starts to finish the season. His 136.1 innings pitched also set a new single-season record.
Ellis took home Southern Conference Most Valuable Player Honors after throwing two complete games in three days during the five-day tournament. Ellis was also named all-conference by the SoCon coaches and SoCon Media Association.
In his final appearance on the mound for the Bulldogs, Ellis threw his ninth complete game of the year against Coastal Carolina in the NCAA Regional Tournament. He pitched five innings without allowing a hit, while striking out a career high13 batters on his way to leading The Citadel to it first Regional win in six years.
Ellis is not the only Bulldog to garner All-America honors in 2004, senior first baseman Chip Cannon was named to the Louisville Slugger/TPX All-America team earlier this month.
