Charleston, SC -
Citadel head coach John Zernhelt pointed to the freshmen class as a bright spot during the Bulldogs' second day of fall drills Wednesday afternoon on Summerall field.
"Our upperclassmen spent a majority of the summer here working out and preparing for the upcoming season," Zernhelt stated. "The freshmen who we haven't seen all summer are the ones that are catching my eye."
The 20 freshmen that reported marked the third largest class at The Citadel in the last five years. The class is balanced and consists of four defensive linemen, three wide receivers, three cornerbacks, three quarterbacks, two linebackers, a tight end, a fullback, an offensive lineman, an athlete and a running back.
"The freshmen wide receivers have been the most impressive of all the groups," Zernhelt continued. "Reggie Cox, Ta'Mar Jernigan, Whitney McDaniel and Earl Whitmore have really showed signs of being able to play on the collegiate level in only a little work."
The Bulldogs will continue workouts on August 12th at 9:00 am on Summerall field in order to miss upcoming weather conditions. The cadets will continue to use Summerall field for at least eight more practices before moving back to Willson Field.
The Citadel opens the season on September 4th at 7:00 pm against Charleston Southern in Johnson Hagood Stadium.
