Citadel Defense Ahead of Offense After First Two-a-Day

Aug. 16, 2004

Charleston, SC - The Citadel football team completed its first two-a-day early Monday evening after opening day seven of preseason camp with a 7:30 am session in full pads. The Bulldogs spent the morning session in full pads on Willson Field, while the second session started late this afternoon on Summerall Field with the Dogs in shorts and shells.

"We were a little sloppy today, but there are some positives," stated first-year head coach John Zernhelt. "As coaches, we have seem some good things from our defense and the offense continues to improve."

Zernhelt believes the defense is ahead of the offense after The Citadel's first week of camp, but has seen some positive improvements from many of the new comers, including freshman quarterback Duran Lawson, and the defense's linebacker corps.

"Duran is a great young man who has a bright future ahead of him," Zernhelt added. "He was a little shaking after the first few practices, but he has settled down has improved remarkably. On the defensive side of the ball, James Wilson is quickly becoming a leader on the field and has the rest of the defense following his example." The 2004 Citadel Football team returns to action at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, August 17th on Summerall Field as it continues its first full week in full pads.

According to NCAA rules mandated before the 2003 season, the team must space out its two-a-day practices every other day with a one-a-day in between. The Bulldogs will return to two-a-days on Wednesday, August 18th with the afternoon session consisting of a scrimmage.
