The Citadel Announces Mike Summey as Assistant Basketball Coach

Aug. 3, 2004

Charleston, SC - Citadel basketball coach Pat Dennis announced Tuesday morning that Mike Summey, a former assistant coach at Queens University in Charlotte will be a part of his 2003-04 staff.

"We are extremely excited to have Mike on board," Dennis stated. "He has a wealth of experience at the Division I experience. Mike's coaching and game preparation skills that he earned at some of the nation's top programs will allow him to make great contributions to our program."

Mike's responsibilities will include teaching and developing The Citadel's group of talented guards and preparing the Bulldogs scouting reports. He will also be counted on to improve the Bulldogs' efforts in the classroom, as well as assist with the day-to-day administration and the program's recruiting efforts.

"When going through the hiring process, I felt Mike fit all the aspects I was looking for," added Dennis. "Mike will be able to use his experience on the recruiting trail, on the floor coaching, in an administrative role and in game preparation to help us take our program to the next level." While the head assistant at Queens for the past season, Summey was responsible for the Royals recruiting efforts, along with their game preparation. He created and supervised an individual instruction program, while also administering the student-athletes' academic programs.

For four years from 1999-2003, Summey was an assistant at Saint Francis in Pennsylvania. From 2000-03 he was a full-time assistant working primarily with perimeter players and compiled detailed scouting reports to the coaching staff and team during game preparation. He also contributed on St. Francis' recruiting trail.

Summey spent his first year at St. Francis as a part-time assistant before being promoted to a full-time coaching slot. During this time, he was the camp director for the Bobby Jones Red Flash Basketball Camp, while also coordinating scouting reports and film exchange.

Summey got his start at NC State as a member of the managerial staff and as a film coordinator. From 1996-99, he directed and organized six student managers for coach Herb Sendek's Wolfpack teams, while coordinating NC State's video needs from 1994-96.

Summey replaces former Bulldog assistant coach Earl Grant who left to become an assistant coach at Winthrop.
