Army Volleyball Sweeps The Citadel, 3-0, at Armed Forces Tournament

Annapolis, MD - The Army volleyball team cruised to a decisive 3-0 victory (30-20, 30-25, 30-11) over The Citadel Saturday afternoon on the second and final day of the Armed Forces Tournament hosted by the Naval Academy. Army snaps a three-match losing skid and improves to 2-4, while the Bulldogs drop to 2-5.

The Black Knights breezed through the match in an hour and fifteen minutes, closing out the match in the third set by picking up 12 kills on 37 attempts without committing a single hitting error. The victory, Army's first blanking of the season, marked the first ever win for Army over The Citadel.

Senior Rachael Travis posted 13 kills and three blocks for Army, while fellow senior Caitlin Machon picked up 10 kills and eight digs. Junior Abby Casciato dished out 30 assists and contributed a team-high 14 digs, while Abigail Stampfler chipped in with five kills and seven digs.

Army's newcomers got into the action this afternoon as well, as Megahn Berndt and Hannah Farrell recorded the first kills of their Black Knight careers. Freshman Lauren Teal tallied a pair of kills and posted three blocks, while Kimberly Jung contributed a pair of digs in the win.

The Black Knights return to action next weekend hosting their second tournament of the season at Gillis Field House. Army hosts Dartmouth, Saint Peter's and Maine next Friday and Saturday. The Black Knights' first match of the tournament is slated for Friday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. versus Dartmouth.

The Bulldogs travel to Statesboro, GA to face Georgia Southern in their Southern Conference opener on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 pm.
