The Citadel (1-5, 0-1 SoCon) picked up their first win of the season as the Bulldogs netted eight goals Saturday afternoon at WLI Field to defeat South Carolina State (0-6) 8-1. The Dogs tallied six goals in the first period, more than they have ever scored in one half of play. Junior Lauren Merchant footed three of the first six points, giving her four goals on the season.
Freshman forward Maggie Bryan netted the ball early in the first half to pick up her first goal as a Bulldog. Merchant then posted two more points as junior Kelly Hasselman picked up an assist. Freshman Ana Miranda added to the score with a header after a cross off the foot of Merchant to make it 4-0. Merchant and Bryan then tallied two more points to give the Dogs a comfortable lead going into the second half.
With the The Citadel up 6-0, senior Rose Rodriguez came out in the second half and charged down the field to score her first goal of the season. Junior Miriam Crawford would wrap up The Citadel's scoring with an unassisted drop to put the Dogs up 8-0.
Sophomore Shadeeka Mendez put the ball in the net for South Carolina State late in the second half, but the game was already out of reach.
The Citadel almost blanked South Carolina State as the Dogs out-shot their opponent 39-7.
"Everyone played well today," remarked head coach Megan Hjerling. "We are looking forward to taking on VMI on Friday."
The Bulldogs are back in action on Friday, September 24 to take on the VMI Keydets at Johnson Hagood Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
