Citadel takes early lead in Spikefest

Orangeburg, SC - The Citadel posted a 2-0 record on day one of the 2004 South Carolina State University Lady Bulldogs Spikefest Invitational Volleyball tournament. Host South Carolina State along is currently tied with two other teams for second place in the tournament at 1-1.

The tournament opened with a heated battle as the Lady Bulldogs of host South Carolina State faced off against The Citadel in match #1 of the tournament. The Citadel posted a 3-2 win over S.C. State in the affair. The Citadel would continue their hot streak posting a 3-0 win over Hampton in match #3 of the day.

South Carolina State would bounce back, however, posting a 3-0 win over Clark Atlanta in the final match of the day to leave SCSU tied with Clark Atlanta and Hampton for second place as each team posted a 1-1 record in day one of the tournament. On the other court, the Clark Atlanta Panthers posted a 3-1 win over Savannah State in match #2 of the tournament. However, the Panthers would not match up so well taking a 3-0 loss at the hands of the SCSU Lady Bulldogs.

The Hampton University Lady Pirates opened the day on a sour note taking a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Citadel. However, the Lady Pirates would bounce back to score their first win of the season posting a 3-0 win over Savannah State.

The Savannah State University Lady Tigers were the only team to go winless on day one of the tournament.

All five teams will be in action on tomorrow beginning with 9:00 a.m. matches between Clark Atlanta and The Citadel as well as match between S.C. State and Hampton. Admission to the tournament is free.
