Annapolis, MD -
Remnants of hurricane Ivan provided 20-25 mph wind gusts and driving rain the entire morning as The Citadel finished ninth in the Salty Seadog Invitational Saturday hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. The women ran second in the invitational after the course had been damaged by the men's teams, which made bad conditions even worse. Ironically, the rain completely stopped as the last lady crossed the finish line.
The women ran six kilometers, which is not a distance normally run during the early season. Six kilometer is the distance run at NCAA regionals to qualify for the NCAA championships.
Sophomore Laura Hewston led the women finishing 48th in a time of 26:32 and freshman Wilma Harp was 49th in 26:43.
"Both of those times were very good under the conditions they were subjected too," said head coach Jody Huddleston.
Next up, The Bulldogs host The Citadel Invitational on Saturday, September 25 at James Island County Park.
