Coach Zernhelt Speaks At Third Press Conference

Sept. 20, 2004

Charleston, S.C. - Head football coach John Zernhelt and the media reflected on last week's game against Appalachian State and discussed what is in store this coming Saturday against Auburn during today's press conference held at the Altman Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Coach Zernhelt led off the discussion by talking about senior tailback Nehemiah Broughton's performance in Saturday's game against Appalachian State.

"He did pretty well coming back from a major knee injury," said Zernhelt. "He made some good cuts and played with a lot of intensity."

Some key turning points in the game were also addressed. The highlight of the Bulldogs' performance against the Mountaineers was their defensive game, but the offense still needs a little work.

"Our defense did an outstanding job containing the run this past weekend, especially against the quarterback on option plays," Zernhelt stated. "As far as our offense goes, we had some mental breakdowns that resulted in long third down attempts. There are some things we have to get corrected in order to be a better offense but I have every confidence that these guys are going to come around." Freshman quarterback Duran Lawson saw some action against the Mountaineers on Saturday. Questions arose as to how much playing time Lawson and fifth year senior Justin Hardin will get between them.

"Lawson brings a different dimension to us, and he does some positive things to make plays," Zernhelt continued. "Hardin has more experience and knows what to do with the football better, but we will continue to work with both of the guys and whoever gets the job done will start."

The absence of freshman running back Montrell Lee on the field was also noted at the press conference.

"That is one position where we might make some possible changes to get some more guys on the field," responded Zernhelt.

Coach Zernhelt's approach to the Auburn game this week was another point of discussion.

"We try to treat every opponent as if they are Auburn," said Zernhelt. "We just need to make sure we are fundamentally sound in technique."

The Bulldogs travel to Auburn this Saturday to face off against the Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium at 2:30 pm, Eastern.
