The Citadel Prepares for the 2004-05 Rifle Season

Sept. 23, 2004

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel rifle team is looking forward to another successful year as they begin the 2004-05 season. The Bulldogs returned to varsity status two years ago after being a club sport for more than ten years.

The graduation of senior Keith Kacmar , the top SEARC shooter for four years, should not greatly effect the Dogs' performance with the return of top female shooter junior Amara Atella and the addition of eight freshman.

"I expect several of them to be first Team shooters this season," head coach William Smith said of the freshmen shooters. The Citadel also returns seniors Jason Dickinson and Sarah Deuschle, juniors Vanessa Swan and Evan Rishel and sophomore Team Manager, Stanley Quarles. The average winning score in the SEARC over the last five seasons increased by over 40 points. This season, the conference changed the match format to 60 shots from 40 and dropped the finals match.

Last year, North Carolina State and Birmingham Southern were extremely tough competitors, and coach Smith does not expect that to be any different this season.

"We should be a good match-up with most of the teams this year with several of our freshmen and all of the upperclassmen currently shooting above the average high score from last season," remarked Coach Smith.

At a SEARC match held at the end of last season in Milledgeville, Ga., The Citadel and NCSU both tied for first place. After counting center shots, the Dogs came out on top of NCSU with Birmingham Southern following close behind in third place.

The Bulldogs will host two home matches this season. The SEARC 5/NCAA Sectional and the APU match will be held upstairs in Deas Hall at The Citadel.
