Charleston, S.C -
Junior Lauren Merchant scored the winning goal with only four minutes left in the game to help The Citadel win their second straight match of the season and defeat VMI 3-2 in front of a large crowd Friday evening at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
The Bulldogs started off slow as Keydet sophomore Colleen Redmond netted the first ball 15 minutes into the first half. The Dogs answered back as junior Julie Austin tallied her first goal of the season two minutes later.
Redmond then scored again for the Keydets off a penalty kick late in the first period. The Bulldogs came out of the first half down 2-1.
The Dogs held VMI better in the second half as The Citadel and junior goalkeeper Angie Ellenwood did not allow the Keydets to score. Senior Debbie White tied it up as she defeated the Keydet goalkeeper and a block to get the ball in the net, her first of the year. Merchant then scored the winning point to give the Dogs their second consecutive win of the season.
"It was an emotional win for us." remarked head coach Megan Hjerling. "It was just what we needed and hopefully it will set the tone for the rest of the season. It was a great crowd tonight and it is always nice to beat VMI."
The Bulldogs will be back for their last game at Johnson Hagood Stadium this season on Sunday, September 25 at 1:00 pm against Eastern Tennessee State.
