The Citadel Loses Tough Match to Winthrop, 4-2

In the second and final game of the Costco Soccer Classic, The Citadel fell 4-2 to Winthrop University after a grueling, physical match at Eagle Stadium. The first goal of the game came 15 minutes into the first period off the foot of Winthrop forward Ashley Abood. Two minutes later, the Eagles scored again when Michelle Butler kicked an unassisted goal. The Bulldogs answered when junior forward Lauren Merchant kicked the ball into the net after a pass by senior midfielder Kara Keiter. The Eagles came back down the field and Allison Stoltz headed the ball into the Bulldogs' goal to put Winthrop up 3-1 going into halftime. The Bulldogs inched closer in the second period as sophomore Holli Knox kicked one in the goal unassisted. With 10 minutes left in the game, Jackie Wright tallied one more goal for the Eagles to make the final score 4-2. "The girls played a hard, tough game," said head coach Megan Hjerling. "We just need to capitalize on our opportunities more." Next up, the Bulldogs go to the College of Charleston to play the Cougars on Wednesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.
