The Citadel Bulldog wrestling team squared off against second-seeded Missouri at 11:00 am Friday at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, VA and came away with a 38-3 loss to the No. 12 Tigers. The Bulldogs then lost to Old Dominion, 24-16 in the consolation first round, but bounced back and beat American, 29-18 in the challenge round to end their stay in Hampton.
The Citadel (1-2) was led by 157-pound junior Travis Piccard who went 3-0 on the day and racked up a major decision and a technical fall. Piccard opened up the day with a 9-4 decision over Missouri's 16th ranked Brad Cieleski. In the Old Dominion match Piccard earned a 12-2 major decision over Nick Pullano, and capped off the day with a 19-3 technical fall against American's Christopher Stout.
Freshmen Andrew McDonald (125), Michael Arias (133) and Alex Piper (141) each went 1-2 in their respective weight classes with each wrestler's lone victory coming by way of an American forfeit.
At 149 pounds sophomore Levi Duyn went 1-2. Duyn's victory came with a pin of Old Dominion's Hunter Davenport at 4:54.
In the 165-pound weight class junior Derik Neitz went 0-2 against Missouri and American, while junior Braxton Harrison went 0-1 with a loss in the Old Dominion match.
Freshmen Darius Caldwell (174), John Buck (184) and Aaron Brown (197) all finished with 0-3 records in their weight classes.
In the Heavyweight division senior Billy Linane went 2-1 with wins coming by forfeit against Old Dominion and by pin against American's Adam LoPiccolo 21 seconds into the match.
The Citadel will head to Cleveland, OH next weekend to participate in the National Duals on January 22 and 23.
