The Southern Conference today named Warren McLendon of The Citadel and Tony Mitchell of the College of Charleston as its men's basketball Co-Players of the Week for games played between Dec. 21 and Jan. 3.
McLendon, a 6-5, 255-pound freshman forward from Dublin, GA (West Lauren HS) averaged a double-double in helping The Citadel to wins over Western Carolina and Navy. McClendon scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the Dec. 21 win over the Catamounts. He added 17 points and six boards in the Dec. 30 win over Navy.
Mitchell, a 5-11, 175-pound senior guard from Augusta, GA (Josey HS), averaged 18.8 points in leading the College of Charleston to four wins including the championship of the Saturn Shootout. Mitchell tied the school record with eight 3-point field goals in a Jan. 2 win over Canisius and also surpassed the 1,000 point mark for his career in the same game. Mitchell scored a career-high 28 points against the Griffins.
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included guard Eric Webb of Furman who averaged 19.7 points in wins over Newberry and Virginia Intermont and a loss to Indiana; and Western Carolina's Rans Brempong who broke the Southern Conference record for career blocked shots with his 270th against Georgia Southern on Jan. 3.
