Georgia Southern Looms after Furman Marathon

Oct. 17, 2005

Charleston, SC - The Citadel head football coach Kevin Higgins entertained the media Monday afternoon in the Altman Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and answered questions on the Bulldog's 39-31 triple overtime loss to the Furman Paladins and their upcoming trip to Statesboro this weekend to battle the Georgia Southern Eagles.

Coach Higgins pointed out that The Citadel played really hard throughout the game and never showed signs of giving up. He also mentioned how the Bulldogs must learn from a game like this and play even harder in Statesboro this weekend.

"I thought we hit Furman harder than we anybody this year," Higgins stated. "Our guys played hard on every down until the last play of the game, but what they take out of this loss will be most important for our trip to Statesboro this weekend."

The play of quarterback Justin Knox was Coach Higgins' next topic. He was unsure of how Knox would react to a humbling first start at Ole Miss, but was pleased with the way he completed and kept the Bulldogs in the game against Furman. Knox completed 22-of-36 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown.

"He did a nice job of competing all day long," Coach Higgins mentioned. "He clearly gave us a chance to win the game and that is all we will ask from him the rest of the year."

The Georgia Southern Eagles, who are coming off of a 24-7 loss to Appalachian State, were the next topic of conversation by Coach Higgins. The Eagles stand at 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Conference after last week's loss to the Mountaineers.

"They are a good football team with a very difficult offense to defend," Coach Higgins explained. "The losses do not change Georgia Southern and we have not played against an option like Georgia Southern or Wofford in the next two weeks. It will be a challenge for us, but our team has to invest more time and get ready for the upcoming weeks. The Citadel plays in Statesboro this weekend against the Georgia Southern Eagles. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 pm and is going to be televised by CSS.
