Charleston, SC -
The Southern Conference announced Monday that Citadel linebacker Porter Johnson has been named its football Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 3.
Furman's Ingle Martin captured the Offensive Player of the Week citation while Georgia Southern's Matt Wise was tabbed the Freshman of the Week.
In only his fourth game as a linebacker, after three previous years as a fullback, Johnson helped the Bulldog defense hold Western Carolina to 14 yards rushing and 166 total yards in a 17-7 win over the No. 18 Catamounts in Cullowhee, NC. The senior from Loris, SC, had 11 tackles, 10 of them solo, while also recording six tackles for a loss, including one sack.
"He was all over the field," said Coach Kevin Higgins. "It is unusual for a linebacker to have six tackles for loss, and Porter is very deserving of the honor."
Johnson is the first Citadel player to receive the league's weekly honor this year.
