Charleston, SC -
Head Coach Kevin Higgins welcomed the media to the Altman Center of Johnson Hagood Stadium Monday afternoon to discuss The Citadel's 28-10 loss to the Wofford Terriers and preview the Bulldogs match up against The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Mocs this Saturday in Chattanooga.
Coach Higgins explained that his team was only one or two plays away from making the Wofford game closer than the score may have indicated. Two plays of emphasis were quarterback Justin Knox's fumble at the Terrier 1-yard line and an interception returned 14 yards for a touchdown.
"The fumble really hurt us because we could have tied the game at 14, but the two interceptions also hurt us," said Higgins. "The first interception gave them great field position and the other one was returned for a score to put them ahead. Those mistakes always hurt, but especially if they are deep in your own territory. Our offense has to do a better job of holding on to the football for us to be successful."
He also highlighted the positives from the defensive side of the ball and how the special teams bounced back from a rough weekend at Georgia Southern.
"I thought the defense played really well, but they were on the field too much in the second half," Higgins stated. "Two of our linebackers, Willie Rowell and Shawn Grant, played well for us on Saturday. Our special teams, especially punter Mark Kasper, had a better game and our kickoff team had a tremendous game with two tackles inside the 20."
Coach Higgins ended the press conference by previewing the Bulldog's upcoming game at Chattanooga this Saturday.
"They are a lot better team than our guys played last year," Higgins explained about the Mocs, who have several new faces in junior college and Division I-A transfers. "They are a good team at home and it will be a challenge for us to win up there. Hopefully our defense will do their job and our offense can get a few things going against their defense."
The Citadel travels to Chattanooga this weekend to play the Mocs in a game that scheduled to kickoff at 2 pm ET.
