Charleston, SC -
The Southern Conference announced Monday that The Citadel's Andrew (Willie) Rowell has been named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Rowell, a 5-11, 220-pound linebacker from Opelika, AL, totaled a career-high 17 tackles in a loss against Wofford on Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium. The sophomore had eight solo tackles and one-and-a-half tackles for loss for a total of 10 yards. Rowell is second on the team with 65 total tackles and has one sack this season.
The league also cited that Appalachian State's Richie Williams, Chattanooga Eldra Buckley and Georgia Southern's Jayson Foster shared the Offensive Player of the Week honor while Chattanooga's Jarvis Newson was the Freshman of the Week.
Rowell is the Bulldogs' second linebacker to earn the weekly honor from the Southern Conference. After the Western Carolina game in Cullowhee, NC, on Oct. 1 in which The Citadel defeated the 18th-ranked Catamounts, 17-7, Porter Johnson was recognized with the league's top defensive honor. He was also tabbed The Sport Network's National Defensive Player of the Week as well.
