Guard Donny McLendon scored 20 points to lead The Citadel past Limestone College 80-64 in a preseason exhibition basketball game Tuesday night in McAlister Field House.
The Bulldogs used a pressure defense and a fast-break offense to control the first half against the Saints. The Citadel's press caused eight Limestone turnovers in the first twenty minutes, leading to a 32-24 Bulldog advantage at halftime.
The Citadel defense continued strong as they held Limestone to only five points in the first five minutes of the second half. The Saints pulled within 13 with two minutes left in the game, but the Bulldogs held on for the 80-64 victory.
Warren McLendon recorded a double-double for the Dogs as he scored 10 points and ripped down 11 rebounds. Demetrius Nelson also tallied 10.
Limestone College got solid efforts from Marquis Bell and Alex Bailey as they scored 16 and 15 points, respectively. Terrell Smith put up 10 and was perfect from the free throw line hitting three of three.
"There were some bright spots but we still have a lot of work to do," commented head coach Pat Dennis. "We got everyone playing time so I'm happy about that."
Meet the Bulldogs will be held Tuesday, November 15 at 6 pm in McAlister Field House. The Citadel will open their season on the road as they travel to Raleigh, NC to face Delaware on Friday, November 17 at 6 pm in a tournament hosted by NC State.
