The Citadel Baseball Inks Nine NLIs

Charleston, SC - Citadel head baseball coach Fred Jordan announced Thursday morning the signing of nine National Letters-of-Intent from Chris Boyce, Eric Broberg, Raymond Copenhaver, Richard Jones, Kyle Jordan, Chris McGuiness, Derrick Raybon, Matt Reifsnider and Nick Sprowls. Six signees represent South Carolina, while the other three are Florida natives.

"We feel this recruiting class meets some of our immediate needs," said Jordan. "I commend our coaches for their time, effort and accomplishments."

Boyce is a student at Hillcrest High School in Greenville, SC where he plays for coach Drew Mahoney. Boyce, a 5-10, 170-pound pitcher/infielder, was named to the 2005 AAAA all-region squad. He batted .298 with a .396 on base percentage in 2005. Boyce has a 10-4 career record on the hill in 152 innings of work, boasting a 1.93 ERA. Boyce, along with fellow Bulldog signee Kyle Jordan, was a member of the Diamond Devils who went 43-14 during the summer and registered a 25-7 fall record under coach John Rhodes.

Broberg is a student at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Sanford, FL where he plays for coach David Wheeler. Broberg, a 6-3, 225-pound pitcher/infielder, batted .404 during his junior campaign with eight home runs and 37 RBI. From the mound, Broberg boasts a 16-1 prep career record while allowing only two hits in the 2005 state championship game. Broberg, along with fellow Bulldog signee Matt Reifsnider, also played for the Orlando Scorpions under skipper Sal Lombardo.

Copenhaver is a student at Apopka High School in Apopka, FL where he plays for coach David Lee. Copenhaver, a 6-4, 202-pound submarine pitcher, recorded 20 strikeouts in 17.2 innings of work. He registered a 1.22 ERA on the hill. Copenhaver played summer ball for the Central Florida Renegades under skipper Bob Pincus.

Jones is a student at Wilson Hall High School in Sumter, SC where he plays for coach Thomas Jones. Jones, a 6-0, 209-pound catcher, was named to the SCISA all-conference baseball squad in 2004 and 2005 while batting .487 during his junior campaign. Jones was also a member of the American Legion 2005 state championship team where he played for skipper Wallie Jones and posted a .422 average. His father, Dickie Jones, was a catcher and regimental commander at The Citadel from 1972-76.

Kyle Jordan is a student at Stratford High School in Goose Creek, SC where he plays for coach John Chalus. A 5-10, 155-pound shortstop, Jordan was named to the Southeastern Baseball All-Tournament squad last season and was a member of the 2005 Stratford High School State Championship team. Jordan batted .330 during his sophomore campaign and boasted a .300 batting average as a junior. Jordan, along with fellow Bulldog signee Chris Boyce, was a member of the Diamond Devils who went 43-14 during the summer and registered a 25-7 fall record under coach John Rhodes. He is the son of Citadel skipper Fred Jordan.

McGuiness is a student at James Island Charter High School in Charleston, SC where he plays for coach Tom Hatley. A 6-0, 190-pound infielder/pitcher, McGuiness was named to the 7-AAAA all-region team in 2004 and 2005. McGuiness has a prep career average of .427 with six home runs and 29 RBI. On the hill, McGuiness posted a 4-2 record and a 1.20 ERA. McGuinness, along with fellow Bulldog signee Nick Sprowls, played summer ball on Stan Kowalski's Pro Level Sports squad.

Raybon is a student at Brookland Cayce High School in Cayce, SC where he plays for coach Brian Hacks. A 6-0, 215-pound pitcher, Raybon boasted a 6-4 record on the hill during his junior campaign with a 2.71 ERA, 73 strikeouts and 27 base on balls. From the plate, Raybon batted .302 with four home runs and 12 RBI. He also played summer ball for Nike Baseball under skipper Mike Prochaska.

Reifsnider is a student at Allen Nease High School in Ormand Beach, FL where he plays for Rich Sperling and Anthony Campanella. A 5-11, 170-pound pitcher/catcher, Reifsnider was honored as all-city and all-state. Reifsnider was named the team MVP while boasting a .382 batting average and posting an 80% assist rate as a catcher. Reifsnider, along with fellow Bulldog signee Eric Broberg, also played for the Orlando Scorpions under skipper Sal Lombardo.

Sprowls is a student at Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant, SC where he plays for coach Jeff Blankenship. A 5-7, 170-pound pitcher, Sprowls was named to the 2005 7-AAAA all-region squad and earned most valuable player as a junior for the Warriors. Sprowls has a prep career 18-6 record on the hill. He was a member of the 2004 Wando Baseball Region 7-AAAA Championship team that was ranked first in the state for their regular season performance by SCBCA and HSSR. Sprowls, along with fellow Bulldog signee Chris McGuiness, played summer ball on Stan Kowalski's Pro Level Sports squad.

The nine signees will enroll at The Citadel for the 2006-2007 school year.
