The Citadel Bulldogs registered three pins and a technical fall en route to a 37-6 Southern Conference victory over host Davidson on Thursday evening. With the win, The Citadel improves to 3-7-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the league, while the Wildcats fell to 7-7 and 0-5 in the SoCon.
With a major decision for Darius Caldwell at 184, the Bulldogs were off and running. Keith Clifton followed with a 16-0 technical fall at 197, then heavyweight Billy Linane recorded the first pin of the evening, giving The Citadel a 15-0 lead.
Davidson got points on the board thanks to junior Patrick Coman at 125, who came up with a 9-3 decision. Two hard-fought battles ensued, with The Citadel emerging victorious with decisions at 133 and 141.
It looked as if things might be turning for the Wildcats at 149 when freshman Benjamin Graham jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the first period. But after trading reversals, Levi Duyn got a second reversal and pinned Graham to give the Bulldogs a 27-3 lead and clinch the dual.
Freshman Matt Pendle earned the other three points for Davidson with a thrilling 4-2 overtime victory at 165. Both he and Coman lead the "Cats with 23 victories apiece thus far this year.
Davidson has one more dual meet, at James Madison on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m., before the Southern Conference Championships take place on March 5 in Greensboro, N.C. Next up for The Citadel are home duals against UNC Greensboro and Campbell on Saturday, Feb. 19, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
