The Citadel starter Jamie Maxwell struck out a career-high seven batters as he picked up his first win of the season and led the Bulldogs to a 9-7 victory over Longwood Wednesday afternoon at Riley Park.
The Citadel (13-19, 5-10 SoCon) took an early lead as they scored three runs in the first. Designated hitter Zach Brown singled to right field to plate third baseman Chris Ard. Second baseman Jon Aughey then picked up two RBI as he hit a shot up the middle to send Brown and right fielder Josh Stackley home to make the score 3-0. The Bulldogs then added another run in the second on a RBI groundout by Stackley to score center fielder Trent Weathers who led off the inning with a double.
Longwood (12-23) cut the lead in half in the third as first baseman Travis Lydon led off with a double to center. Lydon then came around to score on a RBI single off the bat of shortstop Nick von Gersdorff. With two outs, left fielder Tyler Ames then sent a 2-2 offering back up the middle to plate second baseman Chris Balus and make the score 4-2.
After a 30 minute lightning delay, the Bulldogs added to the lead in the fifth on two RBI singles. With one out, shortstop Matt Matulia blasted a triple to center and then scored on a RBI single by Aughey. Weathers then drove in Aughey with a rip through the left side, making it 6-2 before the game was again halted due to lightning.
The Citadel then posted two more runs in the sixth as senior catcher Will Coker singled up the middle to plate Brown and Stackley. Brown then picked up his second RBI of the game as he batted in Ard to put the Dogs up 9-2 in the seventh frame.
The Lancers then rallied for five runs in the eighth. Balus sent a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for a two run blast as designated hitter Charlie Yarbrough ripped a RBI double. Right fielder Louis Ullrich and Lydon both tallied a RBI single to put Longwood within two, 9-7.
Maxwell picked up his first win of the season, improving to 1-1 as he tossed five innings, allowed two runs on three hits and had a career-high seven strikeouts. Lancer hurler Alan Moore suffered the loss as he went four frames, scattered five hits, fanned three and allowed four runs. Sophomore pitcher Link Saunders picked up his second save for The Citadel as he pitched one and a third innings of relief, allowing only two hits and striking out one.
Next up, the Bulldogs will host cross-town rival College of Charleston for a three-game set starting this Friday, April 15 at 6 pm. The Lancers return home to host Hampden-Sydney on Thursday, April 14 at 3 pm.
