Citadel Defense Ahead of Offense After Second Scrimmage

April 16, 2005

Charleston, SC - The Citadel defense dominated the offense during the Bulldogs' second of three spring scrimmages, however, the offense did score three touchdowns, two rushing and one passing, in Saturday's scrimmage at Willson Field.

"The defense did an excellent job all morning until the final period," new head coach Kevin Higgins stated. "The defense needs to learn how to play at a high level of intensity for the entire game, but I was happy to see them cause some turnovers and play with enthusiasm."

On the day, the defense tallied four sacks, two by freshman linebacker Steve Spann, three interceptions and a safety be senior defensive lineman Shaun Palmer. The big play of the day on the defense came early when sophomore defensive back Dwight House intercepted a Justin Knox pass and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown. Defensive lineman Deon Douglas and DB Justin Matherson both recorded interceptions during today's scrimmage.

"Offensively, we are in a new system and it is just going to take time," Higgins added. "But, they are improving everyday and at this point in the season, the defense is suppose to be ahead of the offense."

Senior running back Chris Gibbs led the Bulldog ground attack with 44 yards on 11 carries and two scores, including one leaping goalie score. Tory Copper, a sophomore runner, carried the ball twice for 26, while junior Nuru Goodrum ran for 17 yards on seven touches. In the air, sophomore Duran Lawson completed six of 14 passes for 94 yards and a 29-yard score to second-year wideout Ta'Mar Jernigan. Freshmen reserve quarterbacks Justin Knox and Steve Tumbleston combined for 77 yards on seven completions. Knox, who threw three interceptions, did however find sophomore tight end Aaron Kelly in the back of the end zone for a two-yard touchdown in goal line situation.

Today's scrimmage marked the end of the second week of spring practice. The Bulldogs will wrap-up spring drills this week and conclude on Saturday, April 23 with the annual spring game.
