Shortstop Matt Repec ripped a solo home run and tallied two RBI to help lift Winthrop over The Citadel 6-2 in collegiate baseball action Wednesday night at Riley Park.
Winthrop took the early lead in the second as left fielder Kyle Roberson singled to center with one out. Center fielder Tommy Lentz then hit a shot down the left field line for a double as catcher Alan Robbins walked to load the bases. Repec hit a high fly foul to right that allowed Roberson to tag up from third, giving the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
The Citadel answered back in the bottom half of the frame as first baseman Chris Swauger took a pitch in the back to lead off. Second baseman Jon Aughey dropped one in front of the centerfielder before a RBI double by catcher Will Coker scored both Swauger and Aughey to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles tied it up in the third on back-to-back singles. First baseman Heath Rollins reached on a fielder's choice, right fielder Daniel Carte shot one through the hole in the left side as designated hitter Jacob Dempsey sent Rollins across the plate with a RBI single to center.
A solo dinger to left off the bat of Repec in the fourth then recaptured the lead for Winthrop. In the fifth, Bulldog starter Jamie Maxwell hit a batter and walked two to load the bases with no outs. Stephen Williams then came on in relief and fanned two before issuing a free pass to Robbins to put the Eagles up 4-2.
Winthrop then scored two more runs in the ninth to solidify the win. Roberson hit a RBI double off the top of the scoreboard in left to plate Dempsey as Lentz followed that up with a RBI ground out to short to make the final score 6-2.
Eagle hurler Chase Edwards (1-0) was credited with his first win of the season as he tossed 5.2 innings, allowing runs on six hits and striking out one. Maxwell suffered the loss (1-2) throwing four innings, scattering eight hits, giving up four runs and fanning one.
The Bulldogs continue to play at home this weekend as they host Charleston Southern for a three-game series slated to begin Friday, April 22 at 4 pm in Riley Park.
