Former Bulldog Nehemiah Broughton Drafted by the NFL's Washington Redskins in the Seventh Round

April 24, 2005

New York, NY - Former Citadel running back Nehemiah Broughton was chosen by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round of the 2005 National Football League Draft late Sunday afternoon. Broughton, who is the first Bulldog taken in the draft since Travis Jervery was selected in 1995, was the 222nd overall pick in this year's draft.

"This is a great honor for my family and me," stated Broughton. "I wouldn't have been in this position without my family and my teammates and coaches at The Citadel."

Broughton, who is the sixth Citadel football player to be picked in the NFL Draft, ran for 2,643 yards on 582 carries in his four year career at the Military College of South Carolina. His 2,643 career yards is the fifth best career total for a Bulldog rusher.

The North Charleston native posted 1,038 yards and 11 touchdowns during his sophomore campaign, a number that ranks him just outside of the top-10 on the single-season rushing and scoring lists. His 28 career touchdowns, 25 on the ground and three in the air, is fifth best all-time on The Citadel's career scoring chart. Broughton, who played in the 2005 Senior Bowl, also reached the 100-yard mark 11 times, including twice against perennial I-AA power Georgia Southern and once against Division I-A foe Wyoming.

Broughton, a three-time Southern Conference all-star, is the third Citadel gridiron star to earn a NFL contract in the last three seasons. Cliff Washburn and Lew Dawson each garnered free agent contracts following their careers as a Bulldog. Washburn and Dawson are both currently on rosters in NFL Europe.

"Nemo has been given an excellent opportunity and he deserves everything he has gotten," remarked Toby Strange, The Citadel's offensive coordinator. "Everyone associated with Citadel football should be very proud of him and should wish him well." Bulldogs Drafted by NFL teams
