Broughton signs with Redskins

July 20, 2005

Charleston, SC - Former Citadel standout Nehemiah Broughton will report to his first NFL training camp next month with a new contract in his pocket.

Broughton, a seventh-round pick of the Washington Redskins in April, has signed a three-year deal with the team, which begins training camp Aug. 1.

The North Charleston High School graduate, nicknamed "Nemo-sapien" during his Citadel days, is the second Redskins draft pick to sign. He is expected to complete for playing time at fullback and halfback in coach Joe Gibbs' offense, and to contribute on special teams.

Broughton, 5-11 and 250 pounds, rushed for 2,643 yards in his Citadel career, ranking fifth on the Bulldogs' all-time list. He was selected to play in the Senior Bowl and was the 222nd player chosen in the draft.

The Redskins also drafted fullback Manuel White Jr. of UCLA in the fourth round. White has not yet signed his rookie contract. Linebacker Jared Newberry, a sixth-round pick, is the other Redskins' rookie who already has signed his contract.

Washington's training camp is set for Aug. 1-11 at Redskins Park near Washington, D.C.
