Bulldogs Practice in Full Pads for First Time

Aug. 12, 2005

Charleston, SC - Citadel head coach Kevin Higgins got to see the Bulldogs in full pads for the first time early Friday morning as the football team concluded its fifth day of fall camp with an 8:30 am workout at Willson Field.

"It was good to see the guys in full pads," Higgins stated. "You really get a feel of what kind of team you are going to have once you see them participate in full contact drills."

Following several early morning drills, the team participated in several different situations, including short yardage and goal line scrimmages.

"We got a good luck at our number one defense versus our number one offense in short yardage situations," added Higgins. "I am very impressed with the play and intensity of our defense, particularly the front seven."

Just prior to the conclusion of practice, the team took part in open field tackling drills.

"I saw some young players show some athleticism during the tackling drills," concluded Higgins. "They demonstrated excellent ability to change direction and adapt to various situations."

The Bulldogs will conclude their first full week of camp on Saturday with Media Day. The team will take pictures and meet with the media before breaking for meetings and an afternoon scrimmage. Media Day is closed to the public.

Higgins' squad will open the season at 7 pm against local-rival Charleston Southern on September 3 in Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Injury report: Senior defensive back Brandon Hawkins, who missed the first three days of fall camp with a stomach virus, participated in drills this morning. Junior wide receiver Gary Domanski, who sat out earlier in the week because of a concussion, did not participate in full contact but was present during the morning practice session.
