Bulldogs Focus on Offensive Linemen During Monday's Two-A-Day Practices

Aug. 22, 2005

Charleston, SC - The Citadel's offensive linemen were the focus of Monday's two-a-day practices that were held on Summerall Field in the heart of campus.

Blitz pickups and the 2-minute drill were the primary areas the Bulldogs worked on in the morning's practice while the afternoon's session highlighted short yardage and goal-line offenses.

The offensive line is critical to the success of the spread option offense that first-year coach Kevin Higgins is installing.

"We've seen some improvement on the offensive line since the spring," Higgins stated.

Higgins pointed to sophomore tackle Chris McDowell of Taylors and junior guard Adam Peterson of Jacksonville, FL as being the most consistent blockers up front.

In addition, Higgins stated that starting center Dusty Benefield, a senior from Cumming, GA, had recently missed five days of practice due to a virus, and that he was slowly getting his strength back.

Higgins also pointed to junior tackle Cliff Conant of Rock Hill as one who "has improved significantly since the spring. He understands his assignments better, and is also improving with his footwork and technique."

Much of the afternoon's session featured the offensive line going against the defensive line in short yardage situations, primarily goal line and third-and-one-type plays.

Tuesday's practice is slated for 2 p.m.

The season begins on September 3 when Charleston Southern comes to Johnson Hagood Stadium for a 7 p.m. non-conference showdown.
