Bulldogs - Tar Heels to Meet in Football in 2009

Sept. 13, 2005

Charleston, SC - The Citadel Director of Athletics Les Robinson and University of North Carolina Director of Athletics Dick Baddour have jointly announced that the Bulldogs and Tar Heels will meet on the football field in 2009.

"Playing the University of North Carolina fits into our master plan for scheduling quality I-A programs throughout the country," said first-year coach Kevin Higgins. "We're happy to have the opportunity to be playing the Tar Heels."

The game is slated for September 5 and will be played at UNC's 60,000-seat Kenan Stadium.

There have been three past games between the two colleges who share the blue and white as its school colors with UNC winning all three contests.

The first game was in 1915 with the Tar Heels coming out on top, 14-7. The second contest was in 1939, a 50-0 UNC win, and the last gathering came in 1986 when North Carolina won, 45-14.

This season, The Citadel has already played Atlantic Coast Conference member Florida State and visits Southeastern Conference member Mississippi on October 8. Additional I-A games on the Bulldogs' slate includes Texas A&M in 2006 and NC State in 2007.

Since the reclassification in 1978 that created the I-A and I-AA divisions, The Citadel has played 41 games against the higher classification and has won seven times. The last I-A victories came in 1992 when the Southern Conference champion Bulldogs upset Arkansas, 10-3, in Fayetteville and edged Army, 15-14, at Michie Stadium.
