Senior Tiffany Rice led the Longwood attack with one goal and one assist as the Lancer's shutout The Citadel 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Summerall Field. The Bulldogs fall to 2-2 while the Lancers improve to 2-2.
Freshman Brooke Brumby put the Lancer's on top in the first half as she found the back of the net at 3:26. Brumby carried the ball from midfield and made the goal unassisted.
Rice added to the Lancer lead in the 48th minute as she tallied an unassisted goal to make it 2-0. After a foul on The Citadel, Rice hooked up with senior Anna Gravely who scored on a header to make the final 3-0.
Sophomore keeper Brit Bunnell tallied nine saves on the day while senior Julie Austin led the Bulldogs in shots with four. Freshman Emily Haller and junior Holli Knox each had two shots of The Citadel's 11.
"To play a second game less than 24 hours after our win over a quality S.C. State team was a tough challenge," commented head coach Chris Lenzo. "I'm really impressed with the heart our team showed today."
Lancer keeper Heather Storrie earned six saves. Longwood had 20 shots, including 12 shots on goal, for the day.
Next up, Longwood travels to play Western Carolina on Thursday, September 9 at 6pm while the Bulldogs also return to the road as they take on Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, September 6 at 7pm.
