Charleston, S.C. -
Senior guard Kevin Hammack will receive a medical redshirt for the 2005-06 season, announced Thursday by The Citadel Head Coach Pat Dennis.
Hammack missed the first nine games of the season due to a stress fracture suffered in his right foot. He returned to action on Dec. 18 for the Bulldogs' first conference game at Western Carolina. Five games into his return, Hammack, still affected by the injury, will sit out the remainder of the season.
"It came down to a coach and player's decision. I felt he couldn't play to the level he's capable of playing," Dennis said. "It was a tough decision because we surely could have used him this season. However, it's in his best interest to let him heal and be ready for next season."
In the last five games, Hammack averaged 7.4 points, shooting 32.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range. He totaled 10 assists, two blocked shots and five steals on the season and was only three assists away from moving into a second place tie with Leon Bryant (1986-89) on The Citadel's all-time career assist chart.
Hammack will continue to rehab and workout with the team the remainder of the season. He will return for the 2006-07 season with a full year of eligibility.
