Charleston, SC -
Chal Port, The Citadel's legendary baseball coach, was recognized Thursday night by the Charleston Metro Sports Council with a Lifetime Achievement Award at their 6th Annual Sports Celebration Night at the Charleston Area Convention Center.
He was introduced by his former player and successor, Fred Jordan '79, and becomes the first individual associated with The Citadel to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Sports Council.
Port spent 27 years (165-91) as the head baseball coach and compiled a 641-386-2 overall record and remains the college's winningest coach in any sport. He led the Bulldogs to five postseason NCAA Regional Tournaments and his 1990 team advanced to the College World Series in Omaha. That squad was the first and remains the only military school ever to compete in the CWS.
Named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year five times, Port was the Sporting News National Coach of the Year in 1990.
In his 27 years as the head coach, all but two of his players earned degrees.
