The Citadel Baseball Team Releases 2007 Schedule

Charleston, S.C. The Citadel baseball team has announced its schedule for the 2007 season which features a trip to the Dairy Queen Classic in Minnesota and the second annual Turn Back the Century game against rival College of Charleston. The 2007 slate marks only the second time in eight years that the Bulldogs will not begin the year in a tournament.  The Citadel will open the 2007 season at home for the first time since 2004 as they play host to East Tennessee State for a three game series beginning Friday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. at Riley Park.

The Bulldogs enjoy 10 consecutive home games before hitting the road in 2007.  After ETSU, the Dogs will again host two early season shootouts.  The Citadel will entertain Richmond, Liberty and Super Regional participant South Carolina during the first tournament held February 16-18.  Virginia Tech, Minnesota and UNC Asheville will visit the following weekend, February 23-25.

The Dogs have a mid-week meeting with Campbell at Riley before heading to the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. for the Dairy Queen Classic, March 2-4.  Classic participants include Southeastern Conference Tournament Champion Ole Miss, who made it to the Miami Super Regional in 2006.  Arkansas will also represent the SEC as the Razorbacks made their fifth straight postseason appearance last year.  The tournament marks The Citadel's first ever meeting with the Rebels and the Razorbacks and their second contest against Minnesota as they visit Riley Park on Feb. 24.

The Citadel then returns home for a season-long 13 game home stand that includes a mid-week match-up against Winthrop (March 20). The Bulldogs also open up conference play during that stretch as they host 2006 SoCon regular season champions Elon (March 23-25).

The 2007 slate boasts 14 games with seven teams that qualified for the 2006 NCAA Tournament including four versus the College of Charleston, three in a home series with Elon, a home and road contest with South Carolina (Feb. 18, May 9) and Winthrop (March 20, April 11), as well as one game against UNC Asheville (Feb. 25), Arkansas (March 4), and Ole Miss (March 3) in early season tourneys.  The four games against the College of Charleston will feature the second annual Turn Back the Century game on April 4 at Patriots Point.

Southern Conference play opens at Riley Park against Elon, while the Dogs will host league foes Wofford, College of Charleston and Georgia Southern.  The Citadel plays Western Carolina, Appalachian State, Davidson, UNC Greensboro and Furman on the road.

2007 marks the 18th consecutive year that The Citadel will host the Southern Conference Tournament at Riley Park (May 22-26).  The SoCon adopted a new tournament format last season that includes all 10 conference teams with a single-elimination round between the 7-10 seeds on the first day of tournament play.  The format continues with double-elimination play for the remainder for the tourney.  The Southern Conference Tournament champion is awarded an automatic bid to an NCAA Regional.
