Charleston, S.C. The Citadel Track and Field program released their 2007 outdoor schedule Friday afternoon. The 2007 slate features several of the nation's most respected events, including The Citadel's return to the coveted Penn Relays on April 28-29.
The Citadel will open up the outdoor season on March 2-3 in Savannah, Ga., at the Savannah State Invitational. On March 9-10, the Bulldogs will head north up the coast for a return trip to the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C. On March 17, the Bulldogs celebrate St. Patrick's Day at the Winthrop Duals.
The Citadel will go head-to-head with almost every other service and military academy in the country on March 31 in Lexington, Va., as VMI hosts the first ever Military Classic track meet. Almost all of the major military academies, including Army, Air Force and VMI, will be participating in the meet.
The weekend of April 6-7 starts two consecutive weekends of split squad competition as part of the team will head to Greenville, S.C. for the Furman Invitational. The other part of the team will head to Gainesville, Fla., for the tough Florida Relays. On the following weekend, April 13-14, one split squad group will stay close by and compete at the Charleston Southern Invitational. The other group will head to Knoxville, Tenn., for the prestigious Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee.
The Southern Conference Outdoor Championships will take place in Boone, N.C., on April 21-22, 2007. Following that, a select group of cadet-student-athletes will compete in the oldest track meet in the Western Hemisphere as The Citadel heads to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on April 28-29.
The Citadel returns a stellar group of athletes for the 2007 season, including the 2006 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, Shaquill Smith, who won the high jump and placed in three events at the 2006 Outdoor Championships. The Bulldog women return Stephanie McNeill, the 2006 Field Athlete of the Year in the SoCon. McNeill won the discus and became the first female from The Citadel to ever qualify for and participate in an NCAA Championship event, placing 15th overall and winning her flight in the shot put at the NCAA East Regional Championships.
