Joshua Lawson, Trevar Broughton Named to Media All-Southern Conference Team

Spartanburg, S.C. Junior defensive back Joshua Lawson became the first Bulldog since Nehemiah Broughton in 2003 to be named to the Media All-Southern Conference First Team as the SoCon Sports Media Association's picks were unveiled Wednesday. Junior Trevar Broughton was picked to the Second Team.

“We are very excited about our players being recognized by members of the media for their hard work and effort this year,” said head coach Kevin Higgins. “Both Joshua Lawson and Trevar Broughton were instrumental in the success we experienced this year.”

Lawson led The Citadel defensively in 2006 with 95 total tackles recorded throughout 11 games. Lawson recorded 44 of those tackles by himself with 51 coming as assisted tackles. The junior from Summerton, S.C. recorded 4.5 tackles for a total loss of five yards while returning two interceptions for 21 yards. Lawson broke up three opponents' passes and recorded two quarterback hurries while recovering one fumble on the year.

Lawson recorded a season high 13 tackles in the team's season opener at Texas A&M and matched that performance the next week in the home opener against Charleston Southern. The second of his two interceptions came in the season finale, returning that pick for 11 yards, as The Citadel rolled to a 44-7 victory at Elon. Lawson recovered a VMI fumble on Nov. 11 deep in Keydet territory that set up an eventual Bulldog touchdown as The Citadel dominated The Military Classic of the South with a 48-21 victory.

“I cannot say enough about what Joshua Lawson meant to our team this year,” said Higgins. “He was surrounded by sophomores and freshmen in the secondary and he was the glue that kept them together.”

Broughton was the media's pick for Second Team linebacker. The Hampton, Va., native was a dominating force for The Citadel's defense, recording 47 tackles on the season (17 solo, 30 assisted) with nine of those coming for a total loss of 39 yards. Broughton recorded 2.5 sacks on the year as opponent quarterbacks were stopped behind the line of scrimmage for a total loss of 14 yards. Broughton was credited with one QB hurry this year and recovered one fumble. Broughton also forced three fumbles in 2006.

Trevar Broughton played extremely well the last four-to-five games,” said Higgins. “He spent more time in the film room and was more focused than ever before and it paid off for him on the field.”

Lawson and Broughton helped lead The Citadel to a 5-6 record in 2006, going 4-3 in league play. The Cadets recorded their first winning conference season since 1992 and won four of their last five games with the only loss coming at the hands of No. 1 Appalachian State.
