Spartanburg, S.C. Senior James Wilson was tabbed to the coaches All-Southern Conference First Team while Trevar Broughton, Taylor Cornett and Duran Lawson were named to the coaches All-SoCon Second Team. This marks the sixth consecutive year The Citadel has placed at least one cadet-student-athlete on the coaches All-SoCon First Team.
“We are very excited about our players being recognized for their hard work and effort this year,” said head coach Kevin Higgins. “James Wilson came on in the second half of the season and made some big plays. It's nice to have our other three players back for next year.”
Wilson, a 2005 Second Team honoree, was awarded First Team honors by the coaches, despite missing two games with a shoulder injury near the beginning of the season. Wilson recovered from the injury and came back to record 35 tackles on the season with 20 coming as unassisted stops. Wilson registered three sacks on the year, stopping quarterbacks for a total loss of 23 yards while Wilson recorded 10.5 total tackles for a loss of 47 yards. Wilson broke up two opponents' passes throughout the year with one quarterback hurry. The Longs, S.C., native recorded his first and only career interception in the final game of his career at Elon on Nov. 18, running the ball back 49 yards placing the Bulldogs deep in Elon territory.
“James Wilson was one of our captains this year and exhibited leadership all season,” said Higgins. “He ended his season on a positive note with an interception that he returned for nearly 50 yards. That interception at Elon set us up for an important score. Wilson put tremendous pressure on opposing quarterbacks throughout the entire season.”
Broughton was the media's pick for Second Team linebacker. The Hampton, Va., native was a dominating force for The Citadel's defense, recording 47 tackles on the season (17 solo, 30 assisted) with nine of those coming for a total loss of 39 yards. Broughton recorded 2.5 sacks on the year as opponent quarterbacks were stopped behind the line of scrimmage for a total loss of 14 yards. Broughton was credited with one QB hurry this year and recovered one fumble. Broughton also forced three fumbles in 2006.
“Trevar Broughton played extremely well the last four-to-five games,” said Higgins. “He spent more time in the film room and was more focused than ever before and it paid off for him on the field.”
Despite being hampered by injuries throughout 2006, Cornett was tabbed with Second Team honors. The sophomore from Columbia, S.C., caught 11 passes for 88 yards throughout the season, including a season- and career-long 20 yard catch against Charleston Southern on Sept. 9. That game marked Cornett's most prolific performance with four catches for 33 yards. Cornett also made an impact in The Citadel's dominating 48-21 victory on Nov. 11 against VMI in The Military Classic of the South, catching two balls for a total of 21 yards.
“We expect big things from Taylor next year,” commented Higgins. “He was hampered by two separate injuries throughout the season but still displayed the talent and ability that he has.”
Duran Lawson led The Citadel in all 11 games this season, going 203-for-325 and passing for 2,138 yards, fourth on The Citadel's all-time single season passing charts. The junior from Conway, S.C., also ran the ball on 112 separate occasions for a total of 298 yards, averaging 27.1 yards per game. Lawson threw 14 touchdowns on the season and averaged close to 200 passing yards per game. He ended the season with an outstanding performance at Elon, going 14-for-18 and throwing for 223 yards and two touchdowns in The Citadel's dominating 44-7 victory over the Phoenix. Lawson led The Citadel to a 5-6 record, going 4-3 in the SoCon, The Citadel's first winning league record since 1992. Lawson also led the Bulldogs to victories in four of their last five games with the lone defeat during that stretch coming at the hands of No. 1 Appalachian State.
“Duran Lawson had an excellent season this year,” said Higgins. “It was the first season that he started and finished the whole, 11-game season. Duran matured a great deal as the season progressed and finished with an outstanding game at Elon.”
The Citadel returns three of the four honorees as Wilson is the only senior to be honored. Broughton, Cornett and Lawson will return to The Citadel in 2007 with excitement surrounding the program at its highest level in several years.
