Bulldog Tennis to Open Conference Play Friday at Wofford, Host Davidson on Sunday

Feb. 23, 2006

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel's men's tennis team heads to Wofford Friday afternoon to open up Southern Conference play for the 2006 season. The Bulldogs are scheduled to take on the Terriers in a 1 p.m. match up in Spartanburg, S.C., before returning home to host Davidson in a noon match on Sunday.

The Bulldogs (2-2, 0-0 SoCon) are coming off a 4-3 victory over Tennessee Tech in the Clemson Invitational after dropping consecutive decisions to No. 25 Clemson and Troy.

The cadets return their entire starting line up from the 2005 squad that knocked off Wofford in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament, 4-3, after both teams earned a bye in the first round. Leading The Citadel is 2005 SoCon Freshman of the Year Daniel Dossetor, who is 2-2 at the No. 1 singles position this year. The Citadel and Wofford tied for fourth in the league standings last spring with the Bulldog Netters earning the No. 4 seed while Wofford was given the No. 5 seed in the 2005 SoCon Tournament.

The Terriers, who enter the contest with a 3-3 record, have won three straight, including the last two at home. However, Wofford dropped both of their matches to The Citadel last season as the Bulldogs also took a 4-3 regular season victory over the Terriers.

The Citadel will face a tough competitor in Wofford sophomore Andrew Stubbs, who was named this week's SoCon Player of the Week after knocking off opponents from Mercer and High Point. As a freshman, Stubbs was named to the All-Southern Conference team last year.

On Sunday, The Citadel will host Davidson as the Wildcats come into Charleston boasting a 5-2 (0-0 SoCon) record. Davidson will square off across town with the College of Charleston on Saturday, prior to their Sunday tilt with the Bulldogs.

The cadets will have to keep their eye on Davidson's Phillip Compeau at No. 4 singles as Compeau is entering this weekend's play riding a two-match winning streak. The Bulldogs dropped a tough 6-1 decision at Davidson in 2005.
