No. 54 Virginia Tech Tops Richmond in Charleston, S.C.

Charleston, S.C. - No. 54 Virginia Tech won four singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over Richmond Thursday morning in a match played at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. The Hokies took the doubles point as Virginia Tech (10-4, 2-0 ACC) records a win in their first neutral site match of the season while Richmond (6-8, 0-0 A10) falls to 0-4 in neutral sites in 2006.

The Hokes won at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, as David Rosenfeld and Nicolas Delgado topped Richmond's Bobby McNally and Matt Stillwagon. Va Tech clinched the doubles point with Brent Wilkins and Arvid Puranen winning at No. 3 doubles over the Spiders' Sami Balakhlef and Mark Berajawala. The Spiders recorded a win at No. 2 doubles as Chris Louis and Dave Berry took the thrilling 9-8 win over Va Tech's Alexei Sergeev and Albert Larregola.

The Hokies' singles squad was led by Puranen who strolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Doug Banker. Meanwhile at No. 3 singles, Delgado cruised past Richmond's Balakhlef, 6-1, 6-1.

Richmond scored first at No. 6 singles as Brett Waikart recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ignaci Roca. The Spiders' final point came from Chris Louis at No. 4 singles as he pulled out a tough three-set victory over Va Tech's Brandon Corace, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Virginia Tech returns to action at 1 p.m., as they face the host Bulldogs of The Citadel while Richmond will wait until approximately 4 p.m. to face The Citadel.
