Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel women's head soccer coach Chris Lenzo has decided to step down after his one-year tenure. Lenzo's wife, Candace Boan, gave birth to their first child on Feb. 28, 2006 and Lenzo wishes to take time and stay home with his newborn.
Lenzo made the announcement earlier this week, but will stay on as head coach until April 21, 2006.
"I am disappointed that Chris has resigned, but fully understand that family comes first," said Senior Woman Administrator Kelly Simpson. "He made a career decision that was in the best interest of his family and I totally respect him for that."
Lenzo took over the women's soccer program in the summer of 2005 after four seasons as an assistant coach for the women's program at Western Carolina. During Lenzo's campaign, the soccer team won two out of their first three games for the first time in Citadel history. The wins were against VMI and South Carolina State, while the Dogs also came extremely close to taking their first SoCon win in the program's short history, falling 3-2 in overtime to Elon.
Simpson will head up a search committee for a new women's soccer coach immediately and looks to fill the position by the end of the semester.
"The enthusiasm and dedication to the women's soccer program that he possessed during his short tenure at The Citadel will be missed dearly," added Simpson.
