Charleston, S.C. -
Three teams have sealed their fates for the 2006 Southern Conference men's tennis tournament while The Citadel, for the most part, controls their own destiny as teams across the league enter the final week of regular season pair. The Citadel hosts the annual tournament to decide the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on April 20-23.
According to the Southern Conference's tie-breaking procedure, Elon has sealed the top seed in the 2006 tournament, finishing league play with an 8-1 mark. Furman will be the second seed as they enter the final week of play with a 7-1 league mark and one match remaining. The Paladins will play at Chattanooga on Thursday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m., in both teams final regular season match. Should Chattanooga win that match, the Mocs will secure the fourth seed but a loss could send them down to the fifth seed.
The College of Charleston will be the third seed in the tournament. The Citadel, with a Chattanooga loss to Furman and a win over Appalachian State on Friday, will win the tiebreaker with UTC and secure the fourth seed while the Mocs will be the fifth seed. The quarterfinals feature the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds playing each other. A Bulldog loss, paired with a Wofford win, could send The Citadel as far down as sixth.
Davidson, Georgia Southern and Appalachian State are all battling for the 7-9 spots while UNC Greensboro will finish as the 10th seed unless Appalachian State falls to The Citadel.
This is not an official survey of possible seedings for the tournament. The official seedings will be released by the Southern Conference office prior to the tournament, as early as Sunday, April 16.
The Citadel enters their final match of the regular season with a 10-10 record, 4-4 in the SoCon. The Bulldogs close out the regular season on April 14 when the Cadets travel to Boone, N.C., to face Appalachian State at 1 p.m. Check out the home of Bulldog tennis at www.CitadelSports.com for complete results and all the latest information on The Citadel athletics.
