Box Score

May 23, 2006

Charleston, S.C. - UNC Greensboro's Jermaine Mitchell was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and the seventh-seeded Spartans eliminated 10th-seeded Wofford 6-5 in the first game of the 2006 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The Spartans improve to 25-31 on the campaign and will face off against second-seeded College of Charleston at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Wofford ends it season at 20-37.

Wofford pulled within one at 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, but UNC Greensboro answered with three more runs in the bottom of the stanza to make it 5-2.

UNC Greensboro commenced the inning by advancing to first and second base on two bunts. The very next batter attempted to sacrifice the runners over, but Wofford catcher Keith Munns threw wild to right field allowing the two runners to be plated.

Mitchell a few batters later seemingly popped out to Terrier centerfielder Bradford Eaves with two outs to end the inning, but Eaves could not glove the baseball to allow the Spartans to collect another run and go ahead 6-2 entering the top of the eighth.

The victory would not come easy for the Spartans, as the Terriers were able to score three runs on an Eric Sturkie triple.

With the bases loaded Sturkie lifted a shot to centerfield that went just over the outstretched hands of Mitchell and allowed the Terriers to get as close as they final score would indicate at 6-5.

Wofford did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard, plating a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Shane Kirkley scored Stephen Johnson, who had been walked earlier.

Johnson's theft of second base placed him in scoring position and Kirkley took advantage hitting a soft blooper to left field.

UNC Greensboro's answer was just as swift, as Guy Welsh singled to right field to score Jermaine Mitchell, evening the score at 1-1.

The Spartans tallied two runs in the bottom of the third to obtain a 3-1 lead. Centerfielder Jermaine Mitchell singled to score Greg Feltes and the Spartans picked up an unearned run when Guy Welsh grounded out to second to score Mitchell.

UNC Greensboro starting pitcher Patrick Currin (10-3) pitched 7.0 innings of five-hit baseball to record the victory, while Wofford's Austin Redwine (5-8) was saddled with the loss. Currin also fanned seven Terrier batters.
