Charleston, S.C. The Citadel Athletics Department and Basketball Head Coach Ed Conroy named Doug Novak, formerly of Anderson College, assistant basketball coach. Novak is Conroy's first hire since taking over the helm of Bulldog basketball in April.
A native of Brandon, S.D., Novak was an all-state point guard at Brandon Valley High School in Brandon. He earned a tennis scholarship at the University of Tennessee (1987-90), where he played for the No. 1 team in the country.
Upon leaving Tennessee, Novak headed to Clemson University where he served as an assistant tennis coach and earned a master's degree in education with a concentration in counseling and guidance in 1992.
Also in 1992, Novak earned his first basketball coaching job as an assistant coach at Roane State (Tenn.) Community College where he spent three seasons before being named athletic director and head basketball coach at Iowa Western Community College. Following his stint at Iowa, he moved to Francis Marion where he spent one season as an assistant under Conroy, before taking the job at Anderson College where he has served as head coach since 1999.
“I am very excited about Doug joining our staff. He will be a great fit at The Citadel and brings the teaching ability, communication skills and commitment to our players that I am looking to have on our staff,” Conroy said. “His time as a head coach at both a junior college and in Division II will add to the experience level of our staff. We are familiar with each other as we worked together at FMU and I feel he is one of the best teachers of the game and will add greatly to the development of our players.”
In his second year with the Anderson program, Novak led the Trojans to their first winning record as a member of Division II. In his third year, he led Anderson to a record of 18-10, a tie for the CVAC regular-season championship. Anderson is still the only South Carolina school to win a CVAC regular-season title in men's basketball.
“I have a tremendous respect for what The Citadel stands for and I am especially eager to work with Coach Conroy again,” Novak said.
Novak officially came on board this week and will reside in Charleston.
