Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel's Nick Medica picked up yet another honor Tuesday when he was named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Second Team. Medica, the only Southern Conference athlete and the only Division I athlete from the state of South Carolina to be recognized by ESPN The Magazine, was honored for his academic achievements as he graduated from The Citadel as the second-highest cadet. Medica finished his four years with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
"This is a great achievement for Nick," said head coach Toby Simpson. "He worked very hard at school and has earned this honor. It is also a testament to the quality student-athletes we have at The Citadel. Our boys work hard, both on and off the courts, in the classroom, in the military fields and in practice and games."
Medica, a native of Atlanta, Ga., graduated with a degree in Accounting and was a three-year letterwinner at The Citadel on the tennis team. Medica was forced to sit out his sophomore season as he lost partial sight in his left eye.
The Citadel returned to the Quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament in 2006 before falling to the College of Charleston in a thrilling 4-1 contest.
