Charleston, S.C. The Citadel football team took to the field at Johnson Hagood Stadium Saturday for their second and final scrimmage of the preseason, working out for two hours in front of over 100 fans.
The team worked in various scenarios, with the first and second team offense and defense squads spending the majority of the time going against the scout team, which was playing in packages similar to the style of play of Texas A&M.
“We had a very good, productive scrimmage today,” said head coach Kevin Higgins. “Our defense did a great job handling the option, which is something we will see at Texas A&M. Our offense did a good job at the line of scrimmage. We are going to be playing in a very hostile environment a week from now and we need to be able to handle it. I'm anxious to see where we are as a program.”
Prior to the scrimmage, the team had a brief workout session, running through a handful of various drills. The scrimmage began around 1:30 p.m., with Matthew “Bart” Blanchard leading the scout team against the first team defense.
The first hour was spent working in four down sets, alternating between the first team defense going against the scout team and then the first team offense. Duran Lawson, who will be the starting quarterback in the season opener, went 17-for-23 on the day.
After spending about 20 minutes on special teams, the first and second team offenses were given chances to drive down the field on the scout team. The first and second team defenses were then given the opportunity to stop the scout team offense from driving. Trevar Broughton had a stellar day on defense, recording four sacks.
The team was playing on a shortened, 90-yard field as construction on the new scoreboard required orange pylons to block off the north end zone for safety.
The Bulldogs open up the season next Saturday, Sept. 2 in College Station, Texas as they take on the Aggies of Texas A&M. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT, 7 p.m. eastern.
