Former Bulldog Sean Markey Named Assistant Wrestling Coach

Charleston, S.C. The Citadel wrestling head coach Rob Hjerling has announced that 2006 Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year and former Bulldog Sean Markey has joined his staff as an assistant coach. Markey replaces Marc Hoffer, who recently received his Master's in Business Administration at The Citadel after spending three years on the wrestling coaching staff. Markey joins current assistants Joe Privitere and Jeff Ragan on Hjerling's staff.

“We're sad to see Marc go but we're happy to see him move on his way to business success,” Hjerling said. “It's great to replace him with someone of Sean's caliber and it will be nice to have a Citadel alum on staff.”

Markey ended his Bulldog wrestling career in the spring of 2006 as the school's career leader in wins with a 125-38 record and career falls with 69 at the 133 and 141 pound weight classes. Markey finished his senior season with a record of 29-6 and received the 2006 All-Conference Award in addition to being named SoCon Wrestler of the Year.

The native of Randolph, N.J., was a four-time SoCon finalist, three-time NCAA qualifier, four-year letterman and team captain, and four-time recipient of the Most Falls Award. He was also a three-time All-Academy Champion as well as the 2006 All-Academy Ken Shelton Outstanding Wrestler Award winner. Earlier in his career, Markey received The Citadel Outstanding Wrestler Award in 2003, the 2002 Wrestling Freshman of the Year award, and the 2002 Leadership Award.

Markey is currently pursuing his Master's in Business Administration at The Citadel's College of Graduate and Professional Studies.
