West Point, N.Y. Sophomore setter Emily Hill led the defensive effort for The Citadel, recording 12 digs and setting up 23 assists, but Army was too strong as the United States Military Academy notched a 3-0 sweep of The Citadel Friday night at the Army of One Classic in West Point. Game scores were 30-21, 30-20 and 30-16.
The Citadel (5-5, 0-0 Southern) hit .068 in the game while Army hit .306 in the match. The Black Knights (8-2, 1-0 Patriot League) put down 54 kills in the match on The Citadel, while the Bulldogs only managed to record 28. The Bulldogs were also edged in blocks, 6-3.
The Bulldogs struggled early, dropping the first game 30-22. The Citadel only hit .023 in the game to Army's .273. Rachel Sanders led The Citadel with six kills while Emily Hill recorded six digs. The Black Knights recorded 18 kills in the game to The Citadel's nine.
The Citadel hit .000 in game two despite leading early on. The Citadel did form a defensive presence at the net, recording three blocks. The Cadets recorded only one service ace in the game and also served up four errors while the Black Knights recorded one ace and four service error as well.
The Army rolled to a 20-10 lead in the third set and never looked back as The Citadel struggled to spark their offense. The West Point Cadets hit a dominating .410 in the third game while the Bulldogs hit a match high .206.
