Charleston, S.C. Former Citadel first baseman Chip Cannon and pitcher Jonathan Ellis have been selected by their respective clubs to play for the Arizona Fall League (AFL), owned and operated by Major League Baseball.  Cannon spent the summer with the Toronto Blue Jay's Double-A affiliate in New Hampshire, while Ellis played for the Double-A Mobile BayBears of the San Diego Padres.  Since the league's inception, 1,260 former AFL players have reached the major league ranks.

Cannon is set to play with the Phoenix Desert Dogs after he led the Fishercats in hits (118) and homeruns (27) over the summer.  Ellis will pitch for the Peoria Saguaros and finished the summer with a 2.42 ERA in 37 appearances while recording one save and 54 strikeouts.

The Arizona Fall League consists of six all-star caliber teams.  Each AFL team is comprised of five major league organizations working cooperatively. Each organization is required to assign seven of their most promising major league prospects to the league.

The Arizona Fall League is set to begin its 15th season on Tuesday, October 10, 2006. The regular season will conclude on Thursday, November 16th, with a one-game League Championship Game scheduled for Saturday afternoon, November 18th at Scottsdale Stadium.

• A total of 25 AFL alumni were chosen to participate in the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star Game this past July.

• Since the AFL began in 1992, 94 former players have been selected to at least one MLB All-Star Game.

• As of July, 46 players from last year's AFL rosters had already reached the big leagues this season.

• The total of former Fall Leaguers to play at the big-league level, as of July, was 1,225.
